Using WinZip

HOW TO use WinZip Professional

WinZip 14.5 Professional (fully licensed copy) and its utility WinZip Command Line 3.2 install as part of the SMP2011 installation to the c:\lacc\winzip folder.

In addition to being a program required for SMP to function properly, WinZip is a useful utility that compresses files to a smaller size and combines multiple files into a single zip file. This is helpful when sending files as attachments to emails.  Those that receive attached files will appreciate the smaller size!

How to Compress Files with WinZip

  1. Locate the file(s) you want to compress using Windows Explorer.

  2. Select the file(s) so that they are hightlighted, but don't open them.

  3. SMP2011Right click (use the right mouse button) on the file(s).  A WinZip menu will appear.

  4. Click "WinZip" to open the WinZip menu.

    • If you selected just one file, WinZip will give the option of creating a file with the same name as the file, but with the extension .zip. Choose this option.

    • If you selected a group of files to be compressed and combined into a single WinZip file, WinZip gives you the option of saving the group of files with the name of the directory as the file plus the .zip extension.  Later you can change the name of the WinZip file as necessary.

  5. The WinZip file is automatically created in the directory where you are working and appears at the end of the file list.

  6. WinZip also gives the option of creating a WinZip file and sending it immediately as an attachment to an email.

How To Extract Files with WinZip

  1. Locate the compressed file you want to uncompress. You can use Windows Explorer to locate the file.

  2. Often this file will be an attachment to an email.  If this is the case, you can simply double click on the attached file.  You will be prompted to save the file to disk or open it.

  3. WinZip opens with a list of the files that are in the WinZip file.

  4. You can click on the "Extract" button.  A file dialogue box will open where you will be asked where you want to extract the files to.

  5. Or you can drag files from WinZip to the desired directory that is open in Windows Explorer.  The files are extracted to that location.

  6. Close WinZip.
